“Avram traversed the land as far as the site of Shechem, until he reached Elon Moreh”
"ויעברו אברם בארץ עד מקום שכם עד אלון מורה "
The Yeshivat Hesder Elon Moreh was founded in 1980 by Rabbi Elyakim Levanon shlita, Rosh Ha’Yeshiva and Chief Rabbi of the Shomron, is also the Rabbi of the Elon Moreh community and was one of the most notable students of Rabbi Zvi Yehuda Kook of blessed memory. Elon Moreh is located on the outskirts of Shechem. There are 190 students in the hesder program as well an additional 50 married students who continue their studies prior to university or will continue into education or dayanut.
The Yeshiva is distinguished by a stress on in-depth study of both the oral and written Torah, as well as a strong connection to the pertinent needs of our generation. Study is conducted in a convivial atmosphere and through the personal accompaniment of each and every student by a senior staff member. There were 150 applicants this year for the 35 spaces in the first-year program. This is done so that the Rav Levanon can develop a personal relationship with each student.
When recruited into IDF army service, the students bring their demanding study ethic into a solid devotion to their national homeland. Soldiers who come from Elon Moreh's Hesder Yeshiva have received military commendations and serve as role models for their brothers-in-arms. This year, twelve out of the seventeen students serving as IDF combat engineers advanced and graduated from commander’s school. Prior to Yom Kippur, the yeshiva suffered a great loss when Avinoam Cohen z’l who was 22 years old and serving in the 411 Battalion of the Artillery Corps was killed in a training accident when the self-propelled canon that he was driving overturned into a ditch.
The educational program at the Yeshiva places a bold emphasis on a people-to-people bond, alongside a nurturing of issues relating to the public arena. This orientation serves to strengthen mutual responsibility between people. Moreover, a central feature of our educational mission statement is reserved for the formation of strong and healthy marital bonds.
The extensive Torah curriculum taught in Elon Moreh provides the students with firm values and illuminates the path for its graduates to follow. Students are driven to strive for excellence and they, in turn, act to exert influence on ever-widening circles in general society, thus leaving an indelible mark on all levels of the nation.
In Elon Moreh, hundreds of young men learn how to translate the discipline of study into an active doctrine of a Torah-guided quality of life.
