EZRAT AVOT: Caring Through the Generations
Ezrat Avot is a veteran Jerusalem not-for-profit organization providing the services, resources and education necessary to enable Israel's elderly to age in the comfort and dignity of their own homes and communities. Established in 1976, the agency owes it special legacy to Yemenite sage Rabbi Shlomo Gamliel who immigrated to Israel in 1948 with operation Magic Carpet. Distressed by the poverty of his elderly neighbors, he founded a soup kitchen in his home at the age of 106.
Ably assisted by his granddaughter and current director, Mrs. Naomi Sharabi, the kitchen gradually expanded its scope of activities to include services to an entire community of disadvantaged families. Ezrat Avot has since grown into a multi-faceted organization providing nutritional and social services, elder-abuse awareness, resources and education to the elderly of Jerusalem, with the help of over 120 volunteers every month. Currently located at 2 Habshush St, Jerusalem, its target population continues to be the elderly poor.
Ezrat Avot strives to encourage and enhance supportive communities, enabling seniors of all cultural and ethnic backgrounds to maintain their independence and reduce the frustrations of aging. Executive Director, Naomi Sharabi, is a recipient of the Israel Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare Award for Volunteerism.
