We all know how important good nutrition is for children. Little bodies need vitamins and minerals to ensure that their bones, teeth, and minds can grow and thrive. This is especially important for infants and toddlers in the beginning of life, when they are at their most vulnerable. 

Did you know: There are thousands of children living in the Kalwa slum in Mumbai. Our health clinic in the Kalwa slum treats 7,000 children per year. Since the beginning of the 2016, our doctors have identified 300 children under the age of five who are suffering from severe acute malnutrition (SAM). This means that they do not always know when their next meal will be. It may be tomorrow, the next day, or in a week...

You can imagine how the lack of food affects  these little beings. Without basic vitamins and minerals, these beautiful children are at risk  of stunted physical, emotional and intellectual development, chronic disease, weakened immune systems from iron deficiencies, irreversible brain lesions and thyroid problems from iodine deficiencies, blindness from Vitamin A deficiencies, and even death.

This breaks our hearts.  I bet it breaks your heart, too.

At Gabriel Project Mumbai, we have been working really hard since 2012 to provide literacy, health, and nutrition to the children of the slums of Mumbai. But there are some  children whose malnutrition is so severe that they need immediate intervention. We, along with our partners at Doctors for You, are afraid that if we don't step in immediately and treat the malnutrition, the damage to these beautiful kids will be, well, irreversible. Or worse. 

But there is good news! There is an easy and low-cost treatment for severe malnutrition in children. It's called the  "RUTF" -- Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food Treatment. This is a powerful, protein-based nutritional treatment specifically designed to heal malnourished children under intense doctor supervision. This is the treatment recommended by the World Health Organization for treating severe malnutrition. Clinical research has shown that a three-month, doctor-supervised RUTF treatment alleviates the symptoms of acute malnutrition and helps send children on their way to a healthy, thriving life.
